Solvent Extraction of Jatropha Oil for Biodiesel Production: Effects of Solvent-to-Solid Ratio, Particle Size, Type of Solvent, Extraction Time, and Temperature on Oil Yield

The aim of this study was to examine the effects solvent-to-solid ratio, particle size, extraction time, and temperature on Jatropha oil using three organic solvents, i.e., n-hexane, petroleum ether, ethanol. Soxhlet method used, parameters were varied in following ranges: 24–80°C, time 2 8 h, ratio 4 : 1 7 1, size 0.5–0.8 mm. After obtaining optimal conditions, a large volume prepared, purified, subjected analysis quality parameters. It found that content curcas L. seeds used 48.2 ± 0.12% w/w. highest yield 47.5 0.11% w/w corresponding an recovery 98.6 0.3% obtained with n-hexane under conditions: 6 mm, 68°C. This followed by ether (46.2 0.15% w/w) lastly ethanol (43 0.18% w/w). extracted compared favorably well most values reported literature, suggesting good for biodiesel production. Environmental safety concerns over use hexane pose great challenge. Thus, ethanol, which is environmentally benign, recommended application. conditions gave high as follows: 70°C, 43 89.2 0.4%
